Finally, we get around to posting pictures from the holidays. What a great Christmas we enjoyed with our family and friends. One big highlight was having Blake home. And of course, watching Brantley's joy over all the festivities was so heart-warming. He was the most fascinated with how Santa came down the chimney; it was adorable. In the slideshow you will notice our tacky sweater theme on Christmas Eve. And of course the mustaches and eyebrows had to come out on Christmas Day. Have a tissue handy, these pictures will make you laugh until you cry. After Christmas, our dear friends from Boston came for a few days. We cherished the time we had together and loved how quickly we fell back into our old ways.

In other news, Baby Girl Blair is growing like a weed. We are 30 weeks along this week and feeling very ready for her arrival. I will try to get some belly pictures up soon!

That's right! We are so happy to share our news that Baby Blair #2 is on the way and due April 10, 2012. The baby is doing great and really starting to grow! I'm currently 15 weeks and finally starting to feel back in the land of the living. Ever since I started back to school, the week after our wonderful beach trip, I've been sick. Needless to say, with a 2-year old, a demanding teaching job, and 2 classes, my plate has been very full. I'm so thankful for all the help Price and my family provide. I was sick with a tummy bug a couple weeks ago and it was wonderful that Brantley could stay with my parents while I recovered!

As much as I tend to complain about things, especially when I'm feeling sick, I am happy to have such a life full of challenges. I'm glad I can sit in a graduate education class and discuss ways I can make a difference in kids' lives. I'm glad I work with so many sweet children all day long, even if they are full of germs and mostly misbehave. And I'm the most thankful for a busy, busy 2-year old miracle we call Big B, who has changed my life for the better and made me want to go on this amazing motherhood journey all over again. Life would seem pretty boring otherwise, right? I mean, what was life like before all this craziness? :)

I'll post pictures of our 9-week sonogram soon and a few belly pictures for you.

At long last, I find the time to post pictures of our fun beach trip to cap off a great summer! Highlights from the trip include a trip to the aquarium, watching Brantley amuse himself for long lengths of time in the sand, and spending relaxing time with our families. It felt great to be back on the Crystal Coast and sink our toes in the North Carolina sand and spend as much time as possible in the water. Brantley turned 1.5 years old a couple weeks ago! We are amazed how fast our little man is growing. Price and I had a discussion last night that we think B has entered the "terrible two's!" In many ways, I am happy with that. We are lucky to be able to focus solely on him right now and hopefully we can get this stage done and move on :) That's not to say that for every frustration, we don't have many more special moments with him. He continues to be the sweetest boy ever, so caring and loving, and he has such a big heart. He is talking more and more and he understands everything! He can blow his nose in a tissue and knows how to go throw it away in the trash can. He reads all the time and loves making connections with things in his books: if he sees a ladybug, he wants to go find other ladybugs in the house or in other books. He can kick a ball, jump, and loves doing the downward dog yoga position to make you laugh. I continue to feel so blessed to be raising a little boy and motherhood/parenthood is simply: the best journey ever. As a random stranger we passed on the Black Water Creek trail last weekend said, when Brantley was throwing a bit of a fit: "I remember that phase...and you will miss it!" Every moment of this challenging stage is worth remembering!

So, here are Brantley's BIG boy stats from his 18 month checkup:

A recent email from Isis Parenting (in Boston) just boosted my spirits today. If you are a working Mom, like me, and in need of something to make your busy life feel more worthwhile, read the following:

Balancing family and work can be exhausting and challenging, but it seems to have long-term benefits for mothers.

Busy moms do better?

A research study published in 2006 found that women who juggle a career, marriage, and parenthood tend to be healthier than homemakers, single mothers, and childless women. A team of researchers analyzed self-reported health records of more than 2000 women provided first at age 26 and later at age 54. The analysis showed that homemakers were more likely to report poor health, followed by single mothers and women without children. Homemakers also reported the highest rate of obesity, while women who were mothers, wives, and employees reported the lowest.

Keep in mind, however, that large studies of population groups, known as epidemiologic research, draw large conclusions. While this study, like others of its kind, reveals a broad trend, individual women may find that their own lives contradict the statistics: many women who are able to choose not to work outside their homes report good health and do not suffer from obesity. On the other hand, women who are concerned that being employed while mothering small children may be too stressful can be encouraged by the results that show, on average, juggling the two seems to help keep women active and in good health.

The weekend before Christmas, we headed to D.C. for a special friend's wedding. This was our first weekend away from Brantley, ever, and it was wonderful! Brantley had a great weekend with his Grammy, so we could rest assured he was in good hands. The wedding was beautiful and definitely put us in the Christmas spirit. A New Beginning

Hello Bloggin' World! I'm not sure where to begin, so I'm just gonna dive in! We are off to a new start in our old hometown, but missing Boston so, so much these days! Many wonderful things are happening in our lives, so let's just call this a quick catch-up, and then we'll try to be better at blogging. As new teachers with a 15 month old, we make no promises, but here's to trying : )

1. Brantley is WALKING! The Big Bopper took his first steps about 1 month ago. He hasn't looked back since.

2. We bought the cutest house in Lynchburg and have a lovely guest room, waiting for you to come visit!

3. This week I successfully pulled off my first Scholastic Book Fair. Just one more notch on my first-year-teacher belt!

4. Price is rocking the science world at Lynchburg College. He is making a fast reputation as the cool, young professor you want to have :)

5. We had great fun visiting Raine and the Blair cousins in NOVA, in early October, and then had 2 great weekend visits with Robb, Louisa & Maddie, followed by Erin, Jay & Logan. Fun times!

6. Back to Brantley....he just turned 15 months and here are his stats. Sit down for this one. Weight: 30 lbs 15 ounces / Height: 33.5 inches. He also wants you to know he has 10 teeth, including 2 molars. We brush his teeth and unlike the below picture, we bathe in the big tub now! We are so proud of our growing boy!!

Brantley has hit some major milestones this month! He started crawling a week ago and can now roll over and sit up all on his own. He is even enjoying waking up in the night and practicing all these new skills. Not so much fun for us, but we are still super proud of him!

In case you haven't heard....the Boston Blairs are moving to Lynchburg! We are so happy and so blessed to be moving back home, close to our families, and we are ready to commit ourselves whole-heartedly to a great southern community! Price will be teaching at Lynchburg College as an Assistant Professor of Biology and I will be the new Library Media Specialist at R. S. Payne Elementary School. YAY!

Almost 8 years ago, we left Lynchburg to move to Boston and pursue graduate degrees. Life in Boston has been amazing and given us SO much (most importantly, Brantley!!) and we will never, ever forget our time here. Now we happily move forward to a new life, one filled with loads of promise and lots of southern charm. We couldn't be happier!

We hope you'll continue to follow our journey as a family. We'll be pretty busy in the months to come, but do check back from time-to-time. We will do our best to keep you up-to-speed with all the change ahead.

Now for a quick Brantley update! His top front teeth are both coming in. I have a feeling this is all part of his master plan, so that he can tackle as much solid food as possible. He is on the verge of crawling and is creatively moving around in his own way. Lots of spinning circles on his belly. Just yesterday, he pushed himself up from his tummy to his bottom. This is a big step for a baby who is determined not to roll over. We're having so much fun with him! More pictures to follow....

We are in recovery mode after a wonderful trip home to Lynchburg. We managed to pick the BEST week of the year, in my opinion. It was warm and sunny and the beautiful spring blooms were out in full force. It was a Blanderson reunion with Banks, Jenne and Beatrice making the trip form Oregon, Raine staying for most of the week, and Blake visiting for the weekend. We loved being together!

Hello Friends,

As always, thanks for following our blog. Not sure if you noticed, but we were having some technical difficulties. Our blog wasn't appearing on Internet Explorer (it was fine on Firefox) and it had something to do with our 7 month post. I removed the post and *ta-da* we're back! We'll try to catch up with some new pictures soon.

Here is a recent picture of Brantley with 2 daycare friends. He and Cailyn (in the pink) are 2 weeks apart and BFF. They hold hands, talk to each other, and love playing monkey see monkey do. We can't say enough great things about our wonderful daycare providers!

Although he is still too young to appreciate it, Brantley wore a festive outfit to daycare on Friday. They periodically send us pictures during the week and it makes us feel so happy to see him out-and-about in the world. He loves daycare and is enjoying being around other boys and girls. Welcome Brantley Williamson!

We decided it's finally time to update our blog since the latest addition to our happy family arrived. Brantley Williamson was born on July 20, 2009 at 3:17 am. He weighed a hefty 8 lbs 10 ounces and was 21.5 inches long. Most happily, our hopes for a natural birth came true. I was in labor for about 24 hours, but we were only at the hospital for 5 hours of serious labor, with only 30 minutes spent pushing the "bigger than expected" guy into this world. Price and I are completely overjoyed with our little one. His arrival was even more poignant as his birthday is also the day big Brantley passed away 4 years ago. We know big Brantley was with us and that little Brantley is a true blessing and a way to always remember Price's dad. He was such a wonderful man, one-of-a-kind, and I'm so honored that our son can share such a special name.

Saved By the Bell Reunion!

I haven't watched much Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, but if the man's as obsessed with Saved by the Bell as I am then he's always got a place in my TV lineup. Apparently he's putting together a Saved by the Bell Reunion and most of the cast has already signed on. I can hardly contain my excitement! Many good memories associated with this show...I think Raine and I watched at least 4 episodes a day (yeah, we were that cool). Check out Jimmy's interview with "Zack Morris" below. I love all the show references that only uber-SBTB geeks would get (for instance, Jeff -- works at the Max, steals Kelly from Zack, takes Kelly to prom, Zack and Kelly break up outside the gym while Slater and Spano dressed as Antony and Cleopatra sing Michael Bolton's "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" -- pivotal moment in my life. Stacey Carosi -- played by Leah Remini, who went on to become Carrie Heffernan, a favorite character of the Boston Blairs, dumps Zack at the end of summer, "Need a friend, preppy? How 'bout 5?"). But I digress. Enjoy.

I traveled home for President's Day weekend. It was great to be home and see my family and friends. It was just what I need to get me through the rest of this endless New England winter! I didn't take many pictures, but I thought it would be fun to post the few I did take.

First up, my last morning at home with Mom and Dad...the soon-to-be grandparents!

I flew in and out of Richmond and made sure to stop by Jay and Erin's house to take a peek at what pregnancy looks like at 37 weeks. Erin and I stood belly-to-belly for our little boys to meet and greet. Soon they'll be able to meet in person! Erin is doing great and anxiously awaiting Baby Wolf's arrival...name is TBD.

And yes, you read that correctly. Price and I are expecting a baby boy! We found out this morning at our 18 week ultrasound. Pictures will follow soon. We're all doing great and just as happy as can be :)

Shrimp Scampi

This is a great recipe from Southern Living. It's easy and simple to make and loaded with flavor. Try it out sometime!

Prep: 20 min., Cook: 10 min.

Yield:

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients:

1 pound peeled, large raw shrimp (31/35 count)
1 (12-oz.) package angel hair pasta
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt-free Italian-herb seasoning
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup freshly grated Romano or Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Preparation

1. Devein shrimp, if desired.

2. Prepare angel hair pasta according to package directions.

3. Meanwhile, melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat; add onion and garlic, and sauté 3 to 5 minutes or until tender. Stir in Italian-herb seasoning and Worcestershire sauce.

4. Reduce heat to medium. Add shrimp, and cook, stirring occasionally, 3 to 5 minutes or just until shrimp turn pink. Stir in lemon juice. Toss shrimp mixture with pasta, and sprinkle with cheese and parsley. Serve immediately.

Price and I bought our first big baby purchase this week. And to clarify, Pinky is a nickname someone dubbed Baby Blair at work, so don't get carried away quite yet!

We found a great stroller that we are hopeful we'll enjoy for a long time. It's the Bob Revolution and can even be used for jogging around town. I love thinking that I'll be able to continue with my jogging after the baby arrives. It will be a great way to get outside with the baby. Unfortunately, the stroller is a bit too short for Price to jog safely with, but I don't think he's too concerned about that :) Most importantly, for us city folk, is the 3 sturdy wheels that will easily navigate along sidewalks, parks, and narrow grocery aisles.

Homemade Drain Cleaner

I stumbled upon a safe and effective way to clean out a clogged drain, using products you have right in your kitchen. My bathroom sink was clogged this week, the day of our yucky snow/rain storm, and I didn't want to go out for Drain-o. Not to mention, I don't want to inhale those toxic fumes, pregnant or not. So, I mixed 1 part baking soda, 1 part salt, and a 1/4 part cream of tartar. Pour that mixture down the drain first, followed by a kettle-full of boiling hot water. It took about 3-5 minutes for my drain and then it completely cleared out. And it's still working great. I'll never go back to those toxic cleaners!

We apologize for such a long delay in our blog. We've been riding high ever since Obama's election and can hardly believe we are well into January already. So, let's get down to business and get caught up, shall we?

First things first, Price and I are expecting our first baby! We're so thrilled to be able to share the news with everyone and to enjoy this special time together. I'm a couple weeks into my second trimester and feeling great now. The first trimester was challenging, but fun at the same time. I've completely given myself over to this little one growing inside of me and have been amazed at all the changes. My once love of coffee is now nonexistent - the mere smell sends me running to the bathroom. I have a love/hate relationship with food. I seem to graze on small snacks throughout the day, but really do get tired of eating all the time. My hair and nails are stronger than ever and growing fast. I'm growing elsewhere, too, and have learned how to inconspicuously unbutton my pants for comfort :) Price has been a wonderful partner throughout this time. He is so dependable and has learned to adopt new chores for his pregnant wife. He'll be glad when I can resume litter box duty! We'll be sure to post some pictures as we go along to keep you all updated. Thanks to those of you offering us so much love, support and friendship! You make this time even more special!

Price has recently begun moonlighting at Fisher College. He is now an adjunct faculty member and is teaching Intro. to Human Anatomy and Physiology in Fisher's continuing education program. This week is his first and he's off to a great start. He only has 6 students, but is grateful for the teaching experience. Nice work, Professor!

We celebrated Christmas in Boston this year and had a great time with Mary and Raine. Tuck and Cynthia came over on Christmas Day and we enjoyed a lovely evening together. Overall, the holidays were quiet and relaxing. I didn't have the energy or the stomach to travel, so Price and I hung around frigid Boston for New Years. We are constantly grateful for time with just the 2 of us!

Waiting for November 4th

I can't take much more of this. Two weeks to go, and I'm at the end of my rope. I can't work. I can eat, but mostly standing up. I'm anxious all the time and taking it out on my ex-wife, which, ironically, I'm finding enjoyable. This is like waiting for the results of a biopsy. Actually, it's worse. Biopsies only take a few days, maybe a week at the most, and if the biopsy comes back positive, there's still a potential cure. With this, there's no cure. The result is final. Like death.

Five times a day I'll still say to someone, "I don't know what I'm going to do if McCain wins." Of course, the reality is I'm probably not going to do anything. What can I do? I'm not going to kill myself. If I didn't kill myself when I became impotent for two months in 1979, I'm certainly not going to do it if McCain and Palin are elected, even if it's by nefarious means. If Obama loses, it would be easier to live with it if it's due to racism rather than if it's stolen. If it's racism, I can say, "Okay, we lost, but at least it's a democracy. Sure, it's a democracy inhabited by a majority of disgusting, reprehensible turds, but at least it's a democracy." If he loses because it's stolen, that will be much worse. Call me crazy, but I'd rather live in a democratic racist country than a non-democratic non-racist one. (It's not exactly a Hobson's choice, but it's close, and I think Hobson would compliment me on how close I've actually come to giving him no choice. He'd love that!)

The one concession I've made to maintain some form of sanity is that I've taken to censoring my news, just like the old Soviet Union. The citizenry (me) only gets to read and listen to what I deem appropriate for its health and well-being. Sure, there are times when the system breaks down. Michele Bachmann got through my radar this week, right before bedtime. That's not supposed to happen. That was a lapse in security, and I've had to make some adjustments. The debates were particularly challenging for me to monitor. First I tried running in and out of the room so I would only hear my guy. This worked until I knocked over a tray of hors d'oeuvres. "Sit down or get out!" my host demanded. "Okay," I said, and took a seat, but I was more fidgety than a ten-year-old at temple. I just couldn't watch without saying anything, and my running commentary, which mostly consisted of "Shut up, you prick!" or "You're a fucking liar!!!" or "Go to hell, you cocksucker!" was way too distracting for the attendees, and finally I was asked to leave.

Assuming November 4th ever comes, my big decision won't be where I'll be watching the returns, but if I'll be watching. I believe I have big jinx potential and may have actually cost the Dems the last two elections. I know I've jinxed sporting events. When my teams are losing and I want them to make a comeback, all I have to do is leave the room. Works every time. So if I do watch, I'll do it alone. I can't subject other people to me in my current condition. I just don't like what I've turned into -- and frankly I wasn't that crazy about me even before the turn. This election is having the same effect on me as marijuana. All of my worst qualities have been exacerbated. I'm paranoid, obsessive, nervous, and totally mental. It's one long, intense, bad trip. I need to come down. Soon.

I want to say a few things about last night's debate, but my mind is pretty jumbled (too many late-night Sox games, not enough caffeine), so let's try a little stream of consciousness:

First off, the town hall format stunk. As a New Englander, to call that debate a town hall meeting is ridiculous.
Second, who came up with these rules? You know darn well neither candidate can answer a question in less than 2 minutes, let alone 1. The issues are too complex.
Surprisingly, Tom Brokaw was disappointing as a moderator. He seemed a little rusty and lost control of the proceedings. I think he was penned in by the debate rules. You could see him becoming frustrated. I wish he had chosen better questions.
On that note, why can't we debate issues that neither candidate has touched on yet? Aside from the umbrella topic of energy independence, neither candidate has explicitly laid out his plans for scientific funding. That issue matters to me and my job. And what about abortion? That's a big fat elephant in the room. Why can't we let Americans hear whether John McCain stands by his running mate and her desire to overturn Roe v. Wade? The economy, health care, energy independence, Iraq, and Iran are vital issues, but I would like to hear more on other topics of interest.
If the town hall format was supposed to be John McCain's strength, that's scary. He came across looking very erratic and frazzled, but above all, ANGRY, MEAN and PETULANT. His disdain for Barack Obama is tangible. The McCain camp has come out and said they will not win if this election remains about the issues. Therefore, their only hope is to attack. People at McCain-Palin rallies have actually starting shouting things like "Terrorist!" and "Kill him!" It's true...watch the videos. It's utterly repulsive and John McCain should be embarrassed. Last night, McCain became so concerned with attacking Obama that he neglected to answer many questions.
The ugliness of his campaign is translating over to McCain's image. Somebody get that man a makeover. And a new haircut (the combover's not working). Last night, McCain looked every bit the 72 year old man. How do you sell yourself as an agent of change when you're that age, you've been in the Senate for 26 years, and you still pine for Ronald Reagan? Which generation are you going after?
Once again, John McCain did not use the phrase "middle class." Out of touch.
Barack Obama did not knock the ball out of the park last night, but he did well enough to win. At this point, with his growing national lead and his in-roads in traditionally red states, that's all he has to do...protect the lead. Let McCain continue to implode on himself. I thought Sen. Obama rambled a bit more than usual, and he even dodged a few questions, but he gave some nice answers. I particularly liked how he would call on Americans to make sacrifices in these dark times. Let's begin with a green initiative...gas rations, perhaps? Barack Obama's closing statement was also fantastic. He was inspirational and gave me the confidence that he could pull us out of this mess.
Best line of the night: "John, I think the Straightalk Express lost a wheel."
Second best line: "You're right, John. I don't understand. I don't understand why we're in Iraq..."
Third best line of the night: "I don't think it's walking softly and carrying a big stick when you sing "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran" or call for the annihilaiton of North Korea."
Worst line of the night: "That one." Are you kidding me?
Where did John McCain go at the end of the debate? My theory -- he has an overactive bladder and had to run to the bathroom. Barack Obama stayed and shook hands with everyone in the hall. He worked the room like Bill Clinton.
Bottom line: Everyone said that McCain needed a game-changing performance. He didn't get it. He didn't even tie. Pundits, independents, most people watching thought he was steamrolled. Barack Obama handled questions on the economy better, he was strong on foreign policy, and he exuded professionalism and confidence.
That being said:

PS: Shout out to all you Virginians who are carrying Obama to a lead down there! Keep up the good work!

Don't listen to the McCain-Palin position that Barack Obama will raise your taxes. 4 out of 5 Americans will receive a tax cut under Barack Obama's plan. If you make over $600,000, only then will your taxes be raised. That's either simple fairness, or as they say, to those whom much has been given much is expected. For those making between $250,000-600,000, your taxes will remain exactly as they are under the Bush plan. For those making between $111,000-250,000, your taxes will still decrease, just not as much under Obama's as McCain's plan. Notice finally the VAST differences between Obama and McCain's plan for those families earning less than $111,000. For each income bracket, Obama's tax cut will be greater than McCain's. That means Barack Obama want to put more money in your pocket. The choice is clear.

Thoughts on last night's debate...

Let's begin by saying this...I was disappointed there was no new episode of The Office last night. By Thursday, I need my weekly dose of Michael Scott, and no issue of national significance should stand in the way of my fix. Nevertheless, Bev and I had also been looking forward to the vice presidential debate for some time, and last night's event definitely lived up to the phrase "Must See TV."

We really enjoyed this debate. There was a warmth from both candidates that was mysteriously lacking from the first presidential debate. It's safe to say, too, that both candidates surpassed expectations. The bar was obviously set very low for Sarah Palin following her disastrous interviews with Katie Couric, and you have to say she succeeded by failing to have any moose-in-headlights moments. Likewise, Joe Biden kept his verbosity focused and avoided any foot-in-the-mouth gaffes. That being said, there was one clear winner: Joe Biden. If you look at this debate from an unbiased standpoint (which I'm trying to do), and if you judge each candidate on what they said and how they said it (without considering any pre-conceived expectations on how they would perform), Joe Biden won the debate and is clearly more qualified for the office of vice president. His arguments were clear, direct, and displayed a nuanced understanding of the issues that can only come with experience. Joe Biden's indictments of John McCain's proposed policies, along with their obvious ties to the failed policies of the Bush administration, were also very effective (My personal favorite: "John McCain has been no maverick on the things that matter to people's lives"). Sarah Palin, on the other hand, while well-coached and well-rehearsed, was only comfortable talking about specific issues, as evidenced by her explicit refusal to answer some questions. The answers she did give often meandered and lost their focus. Another thing that disturbed me was Sarah Palin's folksy tone ("Darn right," "You betcha", etc). There is a time and place for this sort of comportment, but on the national stage-- in these dire times -- a folksy tone comes across as a lackof seriousness, an ill understanding, a lame joke. Have we learned nothing from George W. Bush? He has brazenly flaunted his folksy, anti-intellectual attitude, and time and time again he has proven that the executive office requires curiosity and a nuanced understandings of issues. As Sarah Palin herself said last night, "Diplomacy is hard work by serious people." You may want "Joe Sixpack" as your friend, but do you necessarily want that person making decisions that affect the entire world?

On a different note, the most poignant -- and likely most memorable -- moment of last night's debate: Joe Biden emotionally recounting his personal tragedy and relating how he understands what it's like to be a single parent, wondering if everything's going to turn out okay. I'd say a lot of people's opinion of Joe Biden changed with that intimate and telling moment.

One final thought. There's been a lot of attention paid to how Sarah Palin revitalized the McCain campaign. Well, after last night's debate, Bev and I come away with re-energized support and enthusiasm for the Obama-Biden ticket. I would venture to say we're not the only ones feeling this away. For all we can see, Joe Biden is a great man, a great American, and highly-qualified for the office of vice-president. What are your opinions? We'd love to hear!

Great story. Bates College in Lewiston, ME is offering a class through their history department called "Red Sox Nation: Baseball and American Culture." Also cool, Tufts University offers "Mathematical Analysis of Baseball." Makes me want to go back to school. Kind of. Anyway, makes me think -- what were the most memorable classes you took in college? My all-time favorite was my English class on Alfred Hitchcock, hence the obsession with all things Hitch. I also loved Biochemistry and Principles of Pharmacology, but I'm a nerd like that.

This is a great week to celebrate the First Amendment (freedom of speech!), intellectual freedom, and the freedom to read any book you choose -- even if (GASP!) that book challenges your worldview. This is also a great week for protest, as a certain vice presidential candidate has repeatedly tried to ban/burn books in Wasilla, Alaska. (Sorry for the aside, but let me get this straight: certain political parties don't want the government to intervene in any part of their lives but are more than to content to pass moral judgements and push laws that would limit intellectual and personal freedoms?) We've heard enough from the media pundits this past week about how Sarah Palin has energized the GOP base. I didn't think the Democratic base would need energizing considering the broken state of our country, but recent polls might suggest otherwise. Therefore, ponder these phrases and consider how they make you feel:

RISING UNEMPLOYMENT -- MOUNTING NATIONAL DEBT -- DECLINING DOLLAR -- DEREGULATED HOUSING MARKET -- RECORD BANKRUPTCY -- FOUR- DOLLAR GASOLINE -- TRILLION DOLLAR WAR -- RE-EMERGING TALIBAN -- GLOBAL WARMING -- KATRINA -- TORTURE -- INFRINGEMENT ON CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS -- GOVERNMENT REGULATION OF PERSONAL CHOICES

If those phrases, those issues, don't make your blood boil then I won't call you unpatriotic -- that would be too vitriolic, too Rovian -- but I may question your grip on reality. Now think hard: which administration, which political party, has wrought such havoc on our country? The answer's pretty easy.

No matter what John McCain tries to tell you, he is running as a Republican (not a maverick independent), he has supported George W. Bush's policies over 90 percent of the time, he is complicit in Bush's disastrous record, and he promises 4 more years of similarly horrific policies and results. This election is not about which candidate has a more compelling personal story, which candidate served in the military, or which candidate has more executive experience. This election is about ISSUES. And the fact of the matter is, John McCain has been on the wrong side of every major issue for the last 8 years. It's time for change, and by that, I mean real change -- not failed policies cloaked in the mantle of change.

Make no mistake about it, this election will shape the direction of our country for many years to come. If you look around and don't like the direction our country is going, if you look around and don't see the world you envisioned for your children and grandchildren, this is our collective opportunity to change things. Bev and I urge all of you, wherever you may be -- especially those in the all-important swing-states (read: Virginia) -- GET INVOLVED: donate $5 to the Obama campaign, volunteer to register voters, SPREAD THE TRUTH, expose the lies, STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR WHAT IS RIGHT.

It's been a while since our last post, but Bev and I have been enjoying a whirlwind July. For the 4th of July weekend, we were happy to have Erin and Jay come visit. As always, we had a fun time howlin' at the moon with the Wolfs. In the morning we did our patriotic duty and heard the Declaration of Independence read from the balcony of the Old State House.

Later that afternoon, Bev and Erin put together a 4th of July spread that would make Paula Deen proud (deviled eggs, green bean salad, fresh berry trifle!), while Price and Jay grilled Brats and competed in their 2nd Annual Urban Bocce tournament (this time held in the Boston Common). That evening, we rolled ourselves to the Charles River and managed to catch a few fireworks before the humidity and the smoke bank ruined the fun.

Note to self: don't watch the fireworks from the Cambridge side.

On Saturday, we headed down to Quincy to see the birthplace and home of John Adams. After seeing the fantastic HBO miniseries, Mr. and Mrs. Adams have become our new obsession.

Peacefield was beautiful and we enjoyed seeing all the original artifacts still housed there, including the china set which was used to entertain Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and virtually every other founding father. We wish we had had more time to tour the grounds, but we happened to be the last tour on the busiest day in the park's history. Oh well, good excuse to go back after we read David McCullough's book.

The following weekend, Bev and I traveled to VA for Rick's surprise 60th birthday party. What a great time! The look on Rick's face when we surprised him at breakfast was priceless, and we think he was even more surprised that evening.

Carol went all out (as always!) and filled all 75 guests' stomachs with BBQ, potato salad, slaw, Mexican dip, and vanilla icing-covered pretzel sticks. There was even a keg of Heineken that was dangerously cold and dangerously good on a hot VA night. In true Blanderson style, the party got a little crazy as the clock ticked toward midnight. Herman turned on the strobe light, a dance circle formed, and certain people (no names) tested the laws of gravity at the keg. The rest, as they say, is up to your imagination.

We were sad to leave Lynchburg, but we came away with some great memories. These days, there's nothing more satisfying to Bev and me than spending quality time with our families.

When we made it back to Boston, we were lucky enough to avoid work and spend lots of time with Carter and Richard. We had a whole lot of fun touring the city, jamming out to Guitar Hero, and eating out at some great restaurants (Some nameless Italian restaurant with to-die-for ravioli, The Gelateria, The Paramount, Border Cafe, Lizzy's Ice Cream). Yummers! Price and Richard also perfected a personalized fist-bump and worked on their boy band dance routine. We hope they can come back again soon!

Some time has passed since our trip to Cincinnati, but we have to share some pictures. We had all the fun we expected and more. I've determined that family time these days is just about the best thing there is, so maybe we need to make this an annual event? Before I get ahead of myself, here is the weekend in a glance.

Day 2 started with a visit to the Bodies exhibition at the Union Terminal museum hall. If you ever find yourself near this traveling exhibit, we highly recommend it!

We had a great view during this game! The US Army's Birthday was being honored at this game (June 14, 1775), and it was our 5th wedding anniversary!

Dad and Blake busted out the rally caps in the 9th inning. Thanks to Youk, the Sox pulled through with a win, but it was a close game!

Sunday - Game 3: Reds 0, Red Sox 8

Sunday we brought our sign to the game. We worked all weekend on this baby, so we hope Don and Jerry (the Rem-dawg) saw it.

Aside from the return of the classic "Beat L.A.!" chorus (which far surpasses that obnoxious "Yankees suck!"), one of the best chants from last night was when the Celtics fan serenaded Kobe with "No means no! No means no!" Ah, fitting.

Here's a classic article by Bill Simmons, over at ESPN. I enjoyed reading this in the run-up to Game 1 of the Finals, which incidentally was one of the most enjoyable NBA games I've watched in a very long time. I mean, aside from the outcome -- which was FANTASTIC -- that game had it all...(1) The Truth going down injured, then making a dramatic Willis Reed-esque comeback, then slapping high-fives with the fans while he was riding the exercise bike on the sidelines; (2) KG posterizing Paul Gasol with a put-back dunk; (3) PJ Brown scrapping for rebounds and loose balls; (4) and Bev saying these immortal words when Perk left the floor with a sprained ankle -- "I hope they euthanize him." That's right, ladies and gents, my gal is a diehard Celtics fan now.

I mean, Celtics-Lakers? Really?

When I woke up this morning, I half expected to see posters of Eddie Murphy's "Delirious" concert, Larry Bird's milk growth chart (don't ask) and the eternally underrated Heather Thomas hanging on my walls. Actually, I thought this would make for a cool column: me remembering my 1984 bedroom decor, singing Larry Legend's praises, taking potshots at Kareem and Magic, insulting Lakers fans and hitting Send.

My editors, though, objected. They claim that, of the 144 columns I've written for The Magazine, 314 have involved one of my beloved Boston teams. I thought that number seemed a bit high. We haggled. I threatened to quit. They FedExed me a resignation letter with a yellow "Sign Here" sticky on it. We haggled some more. Eventually, they allowed me to write about the biggest Celtics-Lakers rivalry myths—if I remained "objective."

I agreed, if only because I didn't want to blow Chad Johnson's Pulitzer. So without further ado …

Myth: It's the NBA's best and longest rivalry.
Truth: Boston beat L.A. for the title eight straight times before falling in 1985. If that's a long-standing rivalry, so is Tom vs. Jerry, Andy vs. The Sistas and hammer vs. nail. Isn't it more of a "recent rivalry that was once a relentless butt-whupping"?

IF THIS IS A LONG-STANDING RIVALRY, SO IS TOM VS. JERRY.

Myth: It's an East Coast/West Coast thing.
Truth: Actually, Boston swept the Minneapolis Lakers in 1959. Owner Bob Short moved the Lakers two years later, robbing Minnesota of two legends—Elgin Baylor, Jerry West—and starting five decades of sports agony. Making matters worse, the L.A. Lakers was the dumbest team name for nearly 20 years, until the Jazz relocated to Utah. If you root for the Lakers, you not only implicitly support nonsensical team names, you've helped to desecrate Minnesota sports.

Myth: The 1962 Lakers were a wide-open 15-footer from toppling Bill Russell's Celtics.
Truth: You know who took the shot? Frank Selvy. (Who? Exactly.) Should Selvy be deciding your season when you have West and Baylor? I say no. Stupid teams shouldn't win titles.

Myth: L.A. is a flashy franchise with celebrity fans named Jack and Leo, while blue-collar Boston makes do with fans named Murph and Sully.
Truth: That changed when the Big Dig was finished, downtown Boston suddenly became cool, and relaxed tax laws coaxed Hollywood into making movies in Massachusetts. During these playoffs, DiCaprio, Tom Brady, Denis Leary, Ben Affleck, the Wahlbergs, Gisele, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Bruce Willis and Grey (the one with the show about her anatomy) took in games at the new Garden. Sure, they were heckled by drunks named Murph and Sully. But things are looking up. Boston even has bars with drinks that cost more than $5.50 now.

Myth: Kevin McHale's clothesline of Kurt Rambis turned around the 1984 Finals.
Truth: When Rambis hopped up for revenge, peacemaker James Worthy swooped in and inexplicably shoved Rambis into the Laker Girls. Way to help out, James! Ask Worthy to jumpstart your car, and he'd fry you with the jumper cables. Anyway, that was the moment things turned around.

Myth: Magic won the rubber match with Bird in 1987.
Truth: Hold on, my editors are still electroshocking me for the joke I was about to make. [zaaaaap!] OK, we're good. Yes, it's true that Bird beat L.A. once ('84) and Magic beat Boston twice ('85, '87). But when Bird and the 1986 Celts were peaking, L.A. avoided a guaranteed shellacking by getting "upset" by the young Rockets. That's a forfeit win for Boston, bringing the tally to Bird 2, Magic 2.

Corollary myth: Magic beat Boston twice.
Truth: Actually, it was Kareem who killed Boston in 1985, cruising to the Finals MVP. After Magic choked away the previous Finals (no, really—look it up), he was happy to turn things over to the Big Fella. Can you give him credit for that? No way. Including the forfeit, that makes the new Finals score: Bird 2, Magic 1. I'm glad I'm here.

Myth: In the '80s, white Americans supported the Celts, and African-Americans supported the Lakers.
Truth: The Showtime Lakers were definitely a flashier team, exemplified by Worthy's signature tomahawk dunk and Magic's near quadruple-double average in the 1982 Finals (18 points, 11 assists, 9.5 rebounds, 12 women a game). And the C's were definitely a dorkier team, exemplified by Bird's blond Afro-mullet—which did make him a hero in the white-trash states—and McHale and Bill Walton whiffing on 47.8 percent of their high fives in 1986. That said, isn't it racist to assume blacks gravitated to L.A. and whites gravitated to Boston just because Spike Lee blasphemed Larry Legend in "Do the Right Thing"? The only thing we know for sure is that, besides Lakers fans, everyone despised that ninny Kareem. If anything, he transcended race and united the country.

Myth: Playing in a Garden with no AC in 1984, the Lakers needed oxygen masks to survive a humid Game 5.
Truth: Whoops. This one is true.

FOR STONERS, CELTS-LAKERS IN HD MIGHT AS WELL BE A GIANT FISH TANK.

Myth: There's a glaring difference between Celtics home games and Lakers home games.
Truth: Not since Boston embraced air-conditioning—not to mention cheerleaders, luxury suites, T-shirt cannons, overpriced tickets and scoreboards costing more than $250—after closing the Garden, in 1995. Throw in the heavy hitters, and it's not really sooo different from a Lakers game. Well, except for two exceptions: Boston fans show up before tip-off (not during the second quarter); and they'd never bolt close games to beat traffic. Just sayin'.

Myth: Half of the rivalry's appeal has to do with the magnificent clash of uniform colors.
Truth: It's actually closer to 75 percent. For stoners, watching a Celts-Lakers game in HD is like staring at a 50-foot fish tank.

Myth: L.A. and Boston get all the breaks.
Truth: Au contraire! The Lakers somehow acquired Wilt and Kareem in the first two three-$5-bills-for-a-$100-bill trades in NBA history. They swapped a fading Gail Goodrich for two No. 1's (one of whom became Magic). They traded journeyman Don Ford for a future No. 1 (James Worthy). In 1995, free agency rules mysteriously changed one year before Shaq became a free agent, and L.A. just happened to stumble into a ton of cap space. And 2008 was the year of the Pau Gasol hijacking. Wait, that deserves its own myth.

Myth: L.A. and Boston were reborn this season with two legal megadeals.
Truth: At least the Celts gave up Al Jefferson for KG. How was the Gasol trade legal? If I kill my mailman and no one ever finds out, does that make it legal? Jerry West's old team (Memphis) gift-wrapped its best player for the team that once employed West for 40 years, taking back a pupu platter (Kwame Brown, a third-string guard and two crappy picks). This happened even though the Lakers' season would have been over without a center. Had this trade taken place in a fantasy league, it would have led to three weeks of vicious e-mails, crumbled friendships, guys quitting and maybe even a fistfight. In the NBA, it led to the Lakers being presented the 2008 Western Conference trophy by … yup, a crying Jerry West. The NBA, where chicanery happens.

Spending some time outside

We have really been enjoying the return of warm weather to the Northeast. Here is a bit of what we've been up to lately.

Price captured some beautiful pictures of the public garden.
And then managed to find the original Huntington Avenue Grounds where the first Red Sox stadium stood from 1901-1911. Some real baseball greats played here, like Babe Ruth and Cy Young, but now the area is home to Northeastern University.

Back at home, we spent some time in our garden. After a lot of weeding, planting, fertilizing, and mulching, I think we've made some great progress. We're ready for a summer cookout!
